On Friday, January 24, the Delta Cultural Center will host the grand opening of a new exhibition, "The Redemption of a Delta Bluesman: Robert Johnson." The reception will begin at 5 p.m. at the DCC Visitor Center at 141 Cherry Street in historic Helena-West Helena. The free event will feature artist Andre L. Miller, in addition to entertainment and refreshments.
"The Redemption of a Delta Bluesman: Robert Johnson" consists of 29 paintings that focus on the life and legacy of the fabled musician. Although only 27 years old when he died in 1938, his music and style have influenced generations of artists who came after. In American music history, Robert Johnson is known as the "King of the Delta Blues." Some of his most well-known songs include "Cross Road Blues", Hellhound on My Trail" and "Walking Blues."
After a long career in education, Memphis artist Andre LeMoyne Miller decided to focus full-time on his passion. Today, his originals and reproductions can be found across Asia, Europe, and the United States. Miller's paintings and graphite work have engaged in subjects as diverse as the Civil Rights Movement, Delta blues and jazz music, cultural imagery and a series dedicated to the historical Orange Mound community in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2023, Andre Miller completed work on his three-year-long acrylic-on-canvas series paying homage to Robert Johnson.
This unique exhibition will be displayed at the Delta Cultural Center form January 24, 2025, to April 12, 2025.
