A pair of Arkansas Heritage museums laid host to the director of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on Friday, July 25.
Dr. Elizabeth Babcock, named the Founding Director of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum in March, toured through the Old State House Museum and the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center to gather insight and ideas for the new Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum.
The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, currently in its planning and design phase, will be built to create space for women's history on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Their mission will be to deepen the nation's stories and inspire conversation, connection and change.
Dr. Babcock's visit to these two prominent Arkansas museums underscored the interconnectedness of local and national histories. By exploring the stories preserved in Little Rock, she gained a broader perspective on the many experiences of American women. These insights will help the development of exhibits and educational programs at the Smithsonian Museum of American Women’s History.
As Arkansas Heritage continues collaborating with national institutions like the Smithsonian, we look forward to seeing how these shared histories will enrich our understanding of the past and inspire future generations. Dr. Babcock's visit reminds us of the importance of preserving and celebrating our local heritage as part of the broader American story.
