"From Slavery to Freedom and Flourishing in Arkansas, circa 1862 - 1900"
Join the Civil War Roundtable of the Delta on Thursday, February 23, at the Miller Annex, located on historic Cherry Street in Helena, as we welcome Dr. John Kyle Day. Dr. Day is professor of History at the University of Arkansas in Monticello. He was born and raised in Fayetteville. This noted educator received a B.A. in History and Political Science and then a M.A. in History at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Afterward, Dr. Day received a Ph. D. in American History from the University of Missouri-Columbia. In addition to teaching, he is a noted author.
Dr. Day's presentation will discuss how newly freed African Americans made the transition from slavery to freedom after emancipation, to recreate Arkansas society. This lecture will focus on the formation of the Republican Party, fraternal and religious organizations, and educational institutions.
This event will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Miller Annex, located at 223 Cherry Street.

After the lecture, join the staff of the Delta Cultural Center at the DCC Depot for a video premiere. This short video will feature historical maps and noted historians in a discussion of the Battle of Helena, which took place on July 4, 1863. This event is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m. in the Depot Museum at 95 Missouri Street. The museum will also be open until 8 p.m. for visitors.
