Arts In Education

 

The Arts in Education Artist Roster is an online listing of professional performers and visual or literary artists who are available to participate in a variety of Arts in Education programs. The Arts in Education (AIE) program is designed to strengthen the role of the arts in preK-12 educational settings by fostering participation in the arts as an integral part of life and the basic education process. Local schools and community nonprofit organizations may sponsor individual teaching artists or teaching artists associated with a larger arts organization in preK-12 residencies at specific sites to demonstrate their art discipline and link their art form to other curriculum areas. During a residency, artists are based in a school or a community organization where they work with a site coordinator and key staff members to develop programs and activities based on the site’s needs and facilities. Inclusion in the AIE Artist Roster is determined by an independent panel review process.

Artist in residency is all about bringing learning to life through the arts. Collaborating with the classroom teacher to integrate the arts into the classroom would be an essential part of the residency. Connecting the curriculum to the art forms of music and puppetry will engage students and make learning fun. Students will be expected to create (maybe a puppet or song) and perform musically with instruments, songs and puppets. Learning to collaborate with classmates and learning to respect all levels of skill will be paramount as we create and perform. Teachers and students will discover how easily a story can become a musical, theatrical performance that also teaches a life lesson.
Amy Lee is a teacher, musician and puppeteer. Amy holds a Bachelor of music Education and Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Harding University. Additionally she received the Education Specialist degree in Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University in 2009. Amy has worked with Arkansas A+ Schools as a fellow since 2014. Additionally, Amy partners with Jan Wolfe in the company Big Rock Music and Puppetry. Big Rock performs for children of all ages statewide. Amy has twelve years teaching experience in Georgia, Texas and Arkansas. She has also taught private voice, piano and kindermusik classes. Amy is a member of NAfME (National Association for Music Educators) and Puppeteers of America.

Stacy Pendergrast obtained her National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Exceptional Needs in 2008, and she has helped hundreds of students maximize their strengths while addressing challenges that often present in our systems of education. Stacy has considered herself a poet and writer throughout her life, and in 2011, to follow this passion; she earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Chatham University in Pittsburgh. She particularly loves haiku forms, including senryu and haibun, as well as narrative poetry and memoir. Stacy’s work is published in many journals nationwide. Active in Poets Roundtable of Arkansas, she currently serves as the press secretary for Jo McDougall, the Poet Laureate of Arkansas. .

Katie (M.K.) Rainey

Katie (M.K.) Rainey is a writer, teacher, and editor from Little Rock, Arkansas. She is the Co-Executive Director of the Teaching Artists Guild (TAG) and Project Manager of the International Teaching Artist Collaborative’s EDEN Project. Previously she served as the Director of Community-Word Project’s Teaching Artist Project (TAP) and has been a teaching artist for over 15 years. She previously served as Co-Chair of the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable Teaching Artist Affairs Committee and was a part of the 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Emerging Leaders Boot Camp. Katie has taught poetry, fiction, theater, photography, English as a second language, and filmmaking in various parts of the world. For the last seven years, Katie has been teaching at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Queens, NY, working with their 9th grade students on creative writing and using their art-making for activism. She encourages her students to question everything in order to deepen their understanding of the world around them and their own artistic voices. She believes that play and experimentation in the classroom lead to a higher level of critical thinking and a lifelong love for reading, writing, and art-making. Rather than teach the traditional methods of creative writing, she focuses instead on student voice, language, structure, ideas, and having fun in the classroom. When students see writing as fun, rather than a thing they have to do, it becomes a lifelong love rather than a chore. Most importantly, Katie believes that creativity is essential to all aspects of a student’s life, whether they grow up to be an artist or not, and so everyone deserves access to a strong arts education. As a facilitator, Katie leads workshops for adults on social-emotional learning, curriculum building, career development, the business of teachingartistry, and more. She believes that students deserve passionate educators who can create culturally responsive pedagogy accessible to all learners. She has developed and facilitated workshops for teachers for over a decade and enjoys working with learners of all ages. Recently, she has been working with teaching artists across the world to develop climate action curriculums in multiple languages that are free for educators everywhere to access. Katie is the winner of the 2017 Bechtel Prize from Teachers & Writers Magazine, the 2017 Lazuli Literary Group Writing Contest and the 2018 Montana Award for Fiction from Whitefish Review. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Lit Hub, Writer’s Digest, The Collagist, 3AM Magazine, and more. She previously hosted the Animal Riot Reading Series, and was the Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Animal Riot Press, a literary press that strives to collaborate with writers to create work that matters.
