Helen, a native of St. Louis, MO returned to drawing and painting in 1978 while living in Naperville, IL. She resumed painting in oil under local instructors, inspired by the country and city areas of Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1989 under the guidance of C.J. Bailey, a botanical and zoological artist, Helen began painting in colored pencil and also in pen and ink. Focusing on a realist style, these mediums led to works in still life and portraits as well as landscapes. Helen finds the translucent colors she gets by applying layers of colored pencil can lead to quiet and muted or strong and intense paintings; sometimes all together in one painting--frequently with surprising results!
