There is thoughtful precision and care in crafting the hard edge surfaces in my work. Underneath this veneer are abruptly cropped forms and off-kilter compositions that question our notion of a well-executed painting. It is this uneasy balance between these relationships that I am investigating in my work.
The paintings start as a series of small thumbnail pencil drawings on large sheets of paper. This process of sketching helps capture spontaneous moments that I can develop into the final work. Working on a small scale helps me create shapes quickly, as opposed to painting directly onto a large canvas. I’ve found that this process has helped me understand my limitations and make work that I find engaging and satisfying.
