My name is Chakara Adkins, currently known as Phoenix Swan. I’m a multidisciplinary artist who is inspired by the meshing of ancient civilizations, my own ancestry, symbolism, alchemy/magic, womanhood, motherhood, sisterhood and the living cycles that tie women to this planet. I’ve created an alternate world where women are the center focus to their stories through fashion, sculpture, paintings, drawings, decor, furniture, music, dance, poetry, photography, and film. Many of these arenas I am still exploring. My creations are an expression of eons and generations of women who could not express.

I constantly strive to see the world around me, whether it is spending hours, several days, for months at a time staring at clouds; to understand the movement and nature of the shapes and shades. Or considering the differences between natural and artificial light, and how they react differently on water surfaces. . I hope to one day, open my own gallery/studio with an eclectic group of artist. Working together on projects that cover a wide spread of media.

I have a variety of artistic styles but what I am best known for is my blend of mixed media and portraits. I love layers. I use vibrant colors to bring my portraits to life. I work hard to capture the person's personality or the warmth of the moment in each portrait. I use mostly acrylic monoprints, to add texture to the background. Chalk pastels are my favorite dry medium to use. I also like the combination of acrylic paint, ink, oil pastels, and graphite to build my backgrounds and to add details and texture. My goal as an artist is to explore different ways to create traditional subjects. Yes, I am a portrait artist, but I also like to create images that the viewer can relate to and/or create a story about. I know that my artwork isn't for everyone but I am no longer going to hoard my work with the fear of what others may think or say about it.
