Profiles in Arkansas Black History Workshop to be hosted at MTCC

--“Profiles in Arkansas Black History,” a workshop sponsored by the Black History Commission of Arkansas, and the Arkansas History Commission will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.
Each year, the workshop profiles historic African American people, places and events. This year’s focus is the civil rights era from the 1950s-1970s, and includes the following presenters: Howard Himmelbaum (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee); Christopher C. Mercer, Jr., and Judge Wiley Branton, Jr. (The Legal Front); Kathryn Fitzhugh, Archie Moore, Jr., and Milton P. Crenchaw (Arkansas’s African American Ministers in Civil Rights); and Robert L. “Bob” Whitfield, Leroy Brownlee, and Ralph Porter (Sit-ins & Protests). This panel includes presentations on the Pine Bluff Student Movement; the Black United Youth Movement founded in Little Rock; and the Council for the Liberation of Blacks of Hot Springs. The program will conclude with a Rap Session in which attendees can comment on other civil rights activists and events during this time, or ask additional questions of the presenters.
