REGISTER NOW FOR THE BROOKS-BAXTER WAR SYMPOSIUM AT THE OLD STATE HOUSE MUSEUM
January 12, 2009
LITTLE ROCK--Arkansas history enthusiasts have an opportunity to explore the Brooks-Baxter War through presentations by some of the state's leading historians. This year’s seminar will take place Saturday, January 24, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Old State House Museum, 300 West Markham Street, in downtown Little Rock.
The armed conflict between the supporters of two rivals for the Arkansas governorship, Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter, took place in 1874. The war culminated with Baxter being recognized as governor. The war effectively ended Republican rule in the state, halting Reconstruction. Dr. Carl Moneyhon presents an overview of Reconstruction in the U.S. and Arkansas. Dr. Kenneth Barnes provides participants with an account of the Brooks-Baxter War and the fighting that took place. Dr. Jay Barth discusses the aftermath and ramifications of the Brook-Baxter War. Panelists will respond to questions at the program's conclusion.
Admission is free though participants must make reservations by January 20. Seating is limited. Call Georganne Sisco at (501) 324-8641 to make reservations.
