Sam Dellinger: Raiders of the Lost Arkansas

Robert C. Mainfort, Jr. is the author of this book about pioneer Arkansas archeologist Sam Dellinger. The book is an expansion of last year's exhibit featuring artifacts from the state’s pre-history. Copies of the book will be available for $39.95. Admission is free. (501) 324-9685

STUDENT ART
2009 Preserve Our Past Historic Preservation Art Contest Selections
May 1 – May 31
See the prize-winning drawings created by the winners of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program’s annual Preserve Our Past Art Contest. 5th and 7th grade students submit artwork of Arkansas’s historic sites and structures. The winning works are on view in the 1836 House of Representatives Chamber. (501) 324-9685

POLITICS SCHOOL DAYS
A Circus Hitched to a Tornado: Arkansas Politics in the 20th Century
Thursday, May 7 & Friday, May 8
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Reservations required
Visit the Old State House Museum on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, when we host two special school days in conjunction with the Circus Hitched to a Tornado: Arkansas Politics in the 20th Century exhibit. The museum will offer 90 minute programs for 2nd - 7th grade school groups, including: a tour of the Old State House; interaction with living history characters portraying some of the Arkansas politicians featured in the exhibit like Hattie Caraway, the first female elected U.S. Senator; and hands-on activities. Time slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is free. Book your field trip now by contacting the Old State House Museum’s Visitor Services Coordinator at (501) 324-8654.

LIVING HISTORY EVENT
Arkansas Statehood Celebration - 1836
Saturday, June 6
10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Experience a day at the State House in 1836 as Arkansans come to town for their day in court. Participate in actual court cases throughout the day. See a duel on the front lawn. Ongoing activities include: visits with the clerk to register for a land deed or marriage license; meetings with local attorneys who vie for business; meeting the local constable and exploring punishment options for those 1836-residents who break the law; 19th century writing techniques; and Historic Games like Skittles, Trap Ball and Horseshoes. SUMMER FUN YOUTH ENRICHMENT 2009
CSI: Old State House
July 13 – 17 (Grades 7 – 10 rising)
July 20 – 24 (Grades 4 – 6 rising) Registration Deadline: June 26 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. daily Join the Old State House Junior Cadets for one week this summer. Discover the history of Arkansas law and justice. Activities include analytical observation, field trips, forensic identification, investigative techniques, physical training and problem solving. Cadets will graduate after closing a final case. Cost: $75. (501) 324-9685

COMPETITION
Arkansas History Webcast Contest Entries will be accepted November 1, 2009 – January 4, 2010 The Old State House Museum will host its first-ever webcast contest, accepting Arkansas history video and audio entries from students and adults. CHANGING EXHIBITS
Drawing on Arkansas Politics explores Arkansas politics from the unique perspective of Arkansas’s foremost political cartoonists, including George Fisher, Jon Kennedy, Roger Harvell, Tommy Durham, Vic Harville, and Jon Deering. Admission is free. (501) 324-9685

A Circus Hitched to a Tornado: Arkansas Politics in the 20th Century highlights the state’s political legacy, focusing on some of the most significant politicians and the elections that cemented their place in history. UPCOMING EXHIBITS
Bandits, Badges & Bars: Arkansas Law & Justice explores the state’s history of crime, law enforcement, courts, and prisons from pre-territorial days to the mid-1980s. The exhibit includes compelling artifacts and photographs donated by the Arkansas State Police and the Arkansas Department of Correction, as well as objects loaned by other institutions and individuals, and those from the Old State House Museum’s own collections. ABOUT THE OLD STATE HOUSE MUSEUM
The Old State House Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Guided tours are available seven days a week; please call in advance for group tour reservations at (501) 324-9865. Admission to the museum is free.

The Old State House Museum is a museum of the Department of Arkansas Heritage and shares the goal of all seven Department of Arkansas Heritage agencies, that of preserving and enhancing the heritage of the state of Arkansas. The other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, Delta Cultural Center, and Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.
