NEW ACQUISITIONS ARE THE HIGHLIGHT OF FOUR EXHIBITS
October 20, 2008
LITTLE ROCK--The Old State House Museum’s collection of historic artifacts is at the center of its mission as an institution for preserving and interpreting Arkansas history. Every object in our collection possesses the power to convey a greater appreciation and understanding of our cultural heritage. Recently, the Old State House Museum received several private donations of collections representative of different time periods and aspects of Arkansas history. Many of these new artifacts are featured in four new temporary exhibits now on view from October 24, 2008, through March 1, 2009, at the Old State House Museum.
The new slate of exhibits from recent acquisitions includes:
An Arkansas Family Tradition: The Lorenzo Gibson Collection, which features antebellum portraiture and furniture. Gibson represented Pulaski County and Hot Springs counties in the Arkansas General Assembly from 1838 to 1841, and was the Whig candidate for Arkansas governor in 1841. In 1849 President Zachary Taylor appointed him Surveyor-General of Arkansas.
First Mom: Virginia Clinton-Kelley showcases artifacts from the mother of former United States President Bill Clinton and features many personalized items from the campaign trail.
Josiah Demby: Arkansas Unionist contains significant objects relating to the Union cause in Civil War Arkansas. Demby served in the 4th Arkansas Cavalry Regiment. After the war Governor Clayton Powell appointed him Major of Catterson’s Militia. He represented Scott, Polk, Montgomery and Hot Spring counties in the General Assembly from 1868 to 1879. Later, he was appointed by the Department of Interior as Commissioner of the Free Bath Houses in Hot Springs.
Hats Off! The Willie Oates Collection highlights some stylish and imaginative examples from her legendary hat collection. Oates was a member of the Arkansas State Legislature, Vice Chairman of the Arkansas House of Representatives’ Public Health & Practice of Medicine Committee, and civic activist and philanthropist.
