LITTLE ROCK CAMPAIGN COMMEMORATED AT THE OLD STATE HOUSE MUSEUM
August 29, 2008
LITTLE ROCK--It’s September 1863 in Little Rock, and Federal troops are about to take the city! The Old State House Museum will help visitors travel back to that time when it marks the anniversary with a Civil War living history event, the Little Rock Campaign Commemoration, on Saturday, September 6, 2008.
Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the transition between the Confederate and Federal governments as Federal troops raise the United States flag over the State House after the fall of the Confederate Capitol. They will also see encampments from both armies on the front lawn. Those who wish to participate can enlist as a soldier and practice military drills, or interact with artillerymen, infantrymen, cavalry soldiers and civilians throughout the day. Those who attend can also visit a camp laundry, roll bandages for the wounded, and will receive a period style newspaper to bring them up to speed on the news of the day. The Arkansas History Commission will display the 1861 Confederate Constitution, and the Old State House Museum will show related documents, currency, and a battle flag from our collection that was used during the campaign by Arkansas troops. Make plans to also attend a press conference at 10:30 a.m., to unveil the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission’s new website, www.arkansascivilwar150.com.
These events are free to the public and will take place on the lawn of the Old State House Museum from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Call the Old State House Museum at (501) 324-9685 for more information.
