REGISTER NOW FOR MUSEUM’S SUMMER FUN YOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
April 17, 2007

LITTLE ROCK--The deadline for enrollment is June 25 for the Old State House Museum’s popular Summer Fun Youth Enrichment program slated for July.

The 2007 youth enrichment program, EXtreme Excavation Expedition, is tied to the Old State House Museum’s exhibit, Sam Dellinger: Raiders of the Lost Arkansas, which details anthropologist Sam Dellinger’s quest to save Arkansas’s prehistoric past from pot hunters and looters. The award-winning exhibit features artifacts, on loan from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Museum and other prominent national museum collections, created long ago by Indians who lived here.

During a week of hands-on and classroom learning, participants will learn about the fields of anthropology and archeology. Daily lessons will require students’ analytical thinking skills. Kids will also have fun and make new friends while they search for “lost relics” that unlock the secrets to Arkansas’s history and discover prehistoric cultures. The museum’s director, Bill Gatewood, is excited about this year’s program. “The Summer Fun program is great for kids who have a real interest in history.” The annual Summer Fun program is supported in part by the Arkansas Natural & Cultural Resources Council.

The schedule for EXtreme Excavation Expedition is as follows: Grades 3-5 rising will meet July 9 to 13, 2007; Grades 6-8 rising will meet the following week, July 16 to 20, 2007. If neither session reaches full enrollment, both groups will be combined into one class and will meet July 9-13. Classes will take place from 8:00 a.m. to noon daily. The registration fee per student is $70 and includes program supplies, snacks and a t-shirt.

For complete information, please contact Daniel Cockrell in the Old State House Museum’s education department at (501) 324-9685.
