STATEHOOD CELEBRATED AT HISTORIC LOCATION
May 31, 2007
LITTLE ROCK--Travel back in time to 1836…Visitors to the Old State House Museum in Little Rock can celebrate Arkansas’s 171st birthday on Saturday, June 9, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The family-friendly event will offer old fashioned games and hands-on activities for children. Participants may also talk with historically-based townspeople, politicians, travelers, and soldiers as they muse on the happenings of the day: Arkansas's acceptance into the Union, the end of Andrew Jackson's presidency and the upcoming election, the war between Texas and Mexico, and the ongoing conflicts between Indian tribes and the government.
“The Old State House was Arkansas’s first capital and because of this it is a unique symbol of the state’s past, present and future. What a fitting place for this event,” remarks Bill Gatewood, Director of the Old State House Museum.
While at the museum, visitors may view two special exhibits, A Piece of My Soul: Quilts by Black Arkansans and Sam Dellinger: Raiders of the Lost Arkansas, along with the museum’s permanent exhibits.
Events will take place inside the museum and on its front lawn. Admission to the statehood celebration and to the museum is free. Refreshments will be sold. Call (501) 324-9685 for more information.
