Holiday Open House

Families gather at the Old State House each year for Holiday Open House, a traditional seasonal celebration. The annual event offers visitors delicious cookies and punch and fun activities for children. Sounds of the season fill the festively decorated museum as area choirs and musical ensembles perform favorite holiday carols. Admission is free.

This event celebrates Christmas as it was in the 1800s with living history, carols, reenactments, live music, dancing and more. Visitors come from across the state every year for our famous hot cider and ginger cake, as well as Arkansas-made holiday shopping in our Museum Store.

Brown Bags & Books: "Ready, Booted & Spurred: Arkansas in the U.S. - Mexican War"

Through the various papers that were presented at the museum’s 2005 seminar, and featured within this book, readers will gain an understanding about why the war was fought, how Arkansas was involved, and how the war changed American history. Editors William A. Frazier and Mark K. Christ will discuss the war and sign books. Bring your lunch and enjoy a complimentary beverage. Admission is free; books are on sale in the Old State House Museum Store.

Enjoy a great night of art and history on the second Friday of each month. December Art Night is the night of the museum’s Fifth Ever Nog-off, a friendly eggnog competition featuring historic recipes. Historic Arkansas Museum is one of several downtown locations that will keep its doors open to the public until 8 p.m. for an evening of culture, entertainment and shopping. Visitors can start at Historic Arkansas where there is plenty of free parking, and later catch the trolley to visit other participating venues. The Museum Store, featuring the best of Arkansas-made arts and crafts, will be open.
